As most of you are aware, Japan was recently devastated by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake resulting in aftershocks reaching 6.0+ on the richter scale and tsunami as high as 30 feet. Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi, Sendai, and Nagano in particular have received the blunt of this disaster which is not to say that the rest of Japan is not feeling it. According to authorities, aftershocks will still be continuing for at least a month or so. America and the other countries close to Japan have taken action but every thought counts and every penny counts more.
We of JSA will be asking for donations from now until the end of this semester. Now we are looking for a way to donate it to Japan. Please tell your friends.
I hope that everyone in Japan now is safe and well.

Here is some information about the movie we’ll be showing:
Kikujiro is the official international title for Kikujirō no Natsu (菊次郎の夏, literally “Kikujirō’s Summer”), a 1999 Japanese film starring, written, and directed by Takeshi Kitano. Its score was composed by Joe Hisaishi. The film was entered into the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.
Kikujiro tells the story of a young boy searching for his mother during his summer vacation. The film is mostly divided into smaller chapters, listed as entries in the boy’s summer vacation diary. Kitano’s inspiration for the character (not the film) was his own father, Kikujiro Kitano, a gambler who struggled to feed his family and pay the rent.
